Labels in Velveteen
Updated June 12, 2026
A label in Velveteen is the owner-of-record used on releases. It controls release label metadata, label permissions, team management on Label plans, and release approval for managed label workflows.
Independent artists still use a label record. On lower plans, Velveteen can assign the label. Pro and Label plans can use custom label names.
What labels do
Release ownership
Every submitted release needs a label_id.
Copyright text
Lower plans can have locked copyright text tied to the assigned label.
Permissions
label_permissions grants access to label records.
Team workflows
Label plans add label_members, team management, support, and release approval flows.
How labels affect releases
When a release is created, Velveteen enforces the correct label for the account. Managed label users use their managed label. Other users either provide a permitted custom label or receive the default label for their account.
Before submission, Velveteen checks that the release has a label.
