How to Claim Your Spotify for Artists Profile

The short answer

You claim Spotify for Artists by requesting access through the S4A site or app after your music is live. Verification usually routes through your distributor. Once confirmed, you can edit your profile, upload a Canvas, and pitch to editorial. Nothing is editable before access is granted.

Key takeaways

  • Your music needs to be live on Spotify before you can claim your artist profile. No music, no profile to claim.
  • The fastest route is usually through your distributor. Many distributors handle Spotify verification and can get you access in hours.
  • An existing team member with Owner or Admin access can also grant you a role directly, skipping the distributor step.
  • There are four roles: Owner, Admin, Editor, and Viewer. What you can do in the dashboard depends on which role you have.
  • You can't edit your profile, upload a Canvas, or access the pitch tool until access is confirmed. Waiting on verification means your release deadline can sneak up on you.

Before you try to claim: what has to be true first

You need music live on Spotify before you can claim the profile. Spotify for Artists gives you access to an artist account that already exists on the platform, so if your music hasn’t been distributed yet, there’s nothing to claim. Distribute first, then come back.

This matters for timing. If you’re planning a release and want to pitch to editorial before it goes live (which you do, since pitching requires at least 7 days of lead time), you need S4A access locked in well ahead of the release, not the week before. Build the claim step into your release planning early.

This guide covers getting in, roles, and team setup. Everything you do once you’re inside, the Canvas, the Artist Pick, the profile modules, the pre-save tools, is in the Spotify for Artists complete guide.

How to claim your Spotify for Artists access

Go to artists.spotify.com (or open the Spotify for Artists mobile app) and sign in with your Spotify account. Search for your artist name, select your profile, and request access. Spotify then needs to verify you’re actually the artist or connected to the music.

There are two verification paths. The first is through your distributor: if your distributor has a partnership with Spotify (most major ones do), they handle the confirmation on your behalf and access can come through quickly. Check your distributor’s help docs for their specific process, since some have a button or toggle in their dashboard to connect S4A directly.

The second path is the direct Spotify request, where Spotify’s team reviews your claim manually. This takes longer and varies. If you haven’t heard back in a few business days, follow up through the S4A support form. Don’t wait passively when a release deadline is close.

Fastest path if you have a distributor

Log into your distributor dashboard first and look for a “Spotify for Artists” or “artist profile” section. Many distributors have an integrated flow that confirms access in one step without you having to go through the manual request route on the S4A side.

The four roles and what each one can do

Spotify for Artists has a role system so you can give team members access without giving everyone full control. The four roles are Owner, Admin, Editor, and Viewer. Most independent artists are the Owner or Admin, and everyone else on the team gets a lower role.

S4A roles and what they can do
Can doCannot do
OwnerEverything. Full control of the profile, team, billing, and all tools.Nothing is off-limits.
AdminUpdate the profile, manage team roles, run Countdown Pages (if eligible), access all analytics.Transfer ownership.
EditorUpdate profile info, upload Canvas, manage content, pitch to editorial.Add or remove team members, run paid campaigns.
ViewerRead stats and audience data.Change or edit anything on the profile.

The Countdown Pages native pre-save feature requires Admin or Owner access, so if you’ve granted a team member only Editor access, they can’t run Countdown Pages even if the artist clears the listener eligibility gate.

Adding team members once you're in

Once you have Owner or Admin access, go to the Team section in S4A settings. You can invite someone by email and assign them a role before they accept. They’ll get an email invitation to connect their Spotify account to the artist profile with the role you’ve set.

A few things worth knowing about team management. You can have multiple Admins. Removing someone’s access is immediate and they lose the ability to make changes right away. If you’re handing off management to a new team, change the roles before you change anything else. An artist who loses Owner access and has no Admin is in a frustrating spot.

For solo independent artists without a team, this is less of a concern day-to-day. But if you ever bring on a manager, label, or distributor who wants access, you can give them exactly what they need without giving away the whole account.

What if the profile is already claimed?

This happens. A previous manager, a label, or an old email address you no longer use might have access to your artist account and you’ve lost the thread. The fix is Spotify for Artists support. You’ll need to explain the situation and provide proof of your connection to the artist, which usually means a distributor statement or an email from the distribution company that shows you control the releases.

If you parted ways with a manager or team member who had Admin access, get them removed before they do anything you don’t want done. The window where an outgoing team member can still make changes to your profile is exactly as long as it takes you to remove their role. Do it quickly.

Separating from a team member

S4A gives you full visibility into who has each role and when they last accessed the account. Check this when team situations change. Removing an Editor means they can no longer update your profile or upload Canvas. Removing an Admin means they can’t manage team access or run campaigns. Do it from the Team section in settings.

What to do once you have access

Once you’re in, the order of operations is roughly: fill in your bio and profile images so the page looks intentional, upload a Canvas for your key tracks, set an Artist Pick pointing to whatever you’re promoting, and connect Concerts and Merch if you have those. That’s your profile working for you.

If you have an upcoming release, check whether you qualify for Countdown Pages. If not, plan your pre-save through a third-party tool or a smart link. Either way, your editorial pitch window opens once the track is submitted and you need S4A access to do it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get access to Spotify for Artists?+

It varies. Going through a distributor who handles the verification step can be fast, sometimes same-day. Going through Spotify's own request form can take longer, especially if the account needs manual review. If you're stuck waiting more than a few days, check with your distributor first, since they often have a faster path.

Can I claim Spotify for Artists without a distributor?+

Yes, you can request access directly through the Spotify for Artists site. You'll need to verify that you control the artist profile, usually by linking it to a Spotify account that has some connection to the music. In practice, going through a distributor is faster when you have one.

What are the team roles in Spotify for Artists?+

There are four roles: Owner, Admin, Editor, and Viewer. Owner has full control. Admin can manage team access and run most tools including Countdown Pages. Editor can update the profile, upload Canvas, and manage content but can't add or remove team members. Viewer can read stats and data but can't change anything.

Can I have multiple people on my Spotify for Artists account?+

Yes. The Admin or Owner can invite team members and assign them a role. A manager might get Admin access, a social media person might get Editor, and a booking agent might just need Viewer. You can remove or change roles at any time from the S4A settings.

What if my artist profile is already claimed by someone else?+

Contact Spotify for Artists support. If a previous manager, label, or team member claimed the profile and you've lost access, Spotify has a process to investigate and transfer ownership. You'll need to prove your connection to the artist, usually through your distributor's records or released music tied to your account.
