Users in Velveteen
Updated June 11, 2026
A user in Velveteen is an account holder with a profile: an email address, a display name, and a set of permissions across the entities they can access. Users are distinct from artist profiles (performing identities) and from People (credits records with no login). One account can manage multiple artists, labels, and releases.
Understanding the user model in Velveteen means understanding three separate things: your account, the entities you manage, and the access other people have to those entities. This section covers all three.
What this section covers
What is a user?
Your account profile: email, name, avatar, and global role. How users differ from artist profiles and credits records.
Entity permissions
Viewer, editor, and admin access on specific artists, labels, releases, tracks, people records, publishing houses, and pitches.
Label users
The label_members system: managed sub-users under a label with artist, staff, manager, or label_admin roles.
Inviting collaborators
How to grant another user access to your entities and how to remove it.
Three concepts that sound similar
See What is a user? for a full breakdown of how users, artists, and people differ. In short: users log in, artists perform, and people are credits records with no login.
Frequently asked questions
Is my user account the same as my artist profile?+
No. Your user account is your login and your administrative identity in Velveteen. An artist profile is the performing identity that appears on DSP pages and release metadata. One account can manage multiple artist profiles.
What entities can I grant permissions on?+
You can grant viewer, editor, or admin access on artists, labels, releases, tracks, people records, and publishing houses through the Manage Access button on each entity detail page. Pitch permissions are manageable through the Velveteen MCP API only.
How do I add someone to my account?+
You grant access per entity rather than to your account as a whole. To share an artist, release, or track with a collaborator, use the Manage Access button on that entity's detail page and add them with the appropriate role. For label-wide access, add them as a label member.
What is the difference between a user and a person?+
A Person is a credits entity: a composer, lyricist, or performer who appears in track metadata. Persons have no login and cannot access the Velveteen dashboard. Users have accounts and can log in, manage releases, and receive royalties. The same real individual may have both a user account and a person record.
