What Is a Track in Velveteen
Updated June 12, 2026
A track is the recording-level record in Velveteen. It is the song or audio piece inside a release, with its own file, metadata, ISRC, contributors, performers, publishers, and shareholders.
A one-song single still has both objects: one release and one track. The release is the package. The track is the recording.
Track relationships
Release
A track appears on a release through release_tracks.
People
People can be credited as composers, lyricists, contributors, and performers.
Publishers
Publisher rows connect a songwriter or lyricist to a publishing house.
Shareholders
Shareholders split the master royalties and direct-sale credits for that track.
Why tracks are separate
Keeping tracks separate lets Velveteen manage recording-level credits, identifiers, shareholders, and audio without mixing them into release packaging.
It also lets the release submission gate validate each recording before the release goes to review.
