How Much Does Apple Music Pay Per Stream?

The short answer

Apple Music does not pay a fixed per-stream rate. Apple's own 2021 artist letter cited a $0.01 average per play, while current independent royalty data puts Apple closer to $0.006 to $0.01. Use the penny as the optimistic ceiling, not a promise, and expect roughly 100,000 to 160,000 streams for $1,000 gross.

Key takeaways

  • The $0.01 Apple Music figure is genuine and first-party, but it comes from a 2021 letter and Apple called it an average per play, not a set rate.
  • Apple's per-stream average is about double Spotify's, mostly because Apple has no free tier dragging the pool down.
  • Double the rate does not mean double the cheque. Spotify's much larger audience still earns most artists more in total.
  • Duetti's 2024 independent-artist statement average was $6.20 per 1,000 streams, or about $0.0062 per stream. Use the wider $0.006 to $0.01 range for planning.

Where the famous penny figure comes from

In April 2021 Apple sent a letter to artists through the Apple Music for Artists app. In it, Apple put its average per-play rate at a penny. That one line is the source of nearly every “Apple pays $0.01 per stream” claim you have read since. It mattered because, at the time, no major platform had volunteered a number at all.

Read the wording, though. Apple called it an average, calculated on a stream-share basis. So it works the same way as everyone else: a pool of subscription money split by your share of streams, with the per-play figure falling out at the end. The penny was a snapshot of that average in 2021, and a snapshot is exactly what it stays.

Apple gave a real number, which was rare and worth respecting. It also told you, in the same breath, that the number was an average.

Why Apple pays more per stream than Spotify

The gap comes down to free listening. Spotify has a huge ad-supported tier, and a free stream feeds the pool far less than a paid one. Apple Music has no free tier at all. Everyone listening is a subscriber, so the average revenue behind each Apple stream is higher. That single structural difference explains most of why Apple’s number is roughly twice Spotify’s.

Higher rate, smaller audience

Before you read too much into the penny, check your own numbers. Apple reaches fewer listeners than Spotify for most independent artists. A higher rate on a smaller audience can still add up to less money. The rate is worth knowing. Your listener count on each platform decides the actual total.

What to actually expect today

The penny is five years old now, and current indie royalty data tends to show a little less. Duetti’s 2024 statement data put Apple at $6.20 per 1,000 streams, which is about $0.0062 per stream. RouteNote and similar distributor estimates still put Apple closer to $0.007 to $0.01. That disagreement is the point: use a range for planning and remember every figure here is gross to the rightsholder, before your distributor takes its cut.

To turn this into a real number for your release, run your stream estimate, your splits, and your fee through the calculator. At $0.0062, 100,000 streams is about $620 gross. At the full penny, it is about $1,000 gross. The same audience can produce two very different planning numbers depending on which average is closer to your listener mix.

Frequently asked questions

Does Apple Music really pay $0.01 per stream?+

That number is real but often misread. It comes from Apple's April 2021 letter to artists, where Apple stated its average per-play rate was a penny. Apple called it an average calculated on a stream-share basis, not a guaranteed rate. Current indie royalty data often lands lower, around $0.006 to $0.01, so a penny is the optimistic end of the range.

Is Apple Music better than Spotify for payouts?+

On the per-stream number, yes, Apple's average runs roughly double Spotify's. But Spotify has far more listeners, so for most artists Spotify still pays more in total dollars. Apple paying more per play only helps you if you have a real audience there. Look at where your listeners actually are before reading anything into the rate.

Why is Apple's rate higher than Spotify's?+

Apple Music has no free, ad-supported tier. Every listener is a paying subscriber, so the revenue pool per stream is richer than Spotify's, which mixes paid and free listening. Fewer low-value free streams dragging down the average is most of the story behind Apple's higher number.

How many Apple Music streams to make $1,000?+

At a full penny, it takes about 100,000 streams to reach $1,000 gross to the rightsholder. At Duetti's reported $0.0062 average, it is closer to 161,000 streams. Both figures are before your distributor's cut, collaborator splits, and recoupment, so what reaches you is lower.
