Short answer

Published August 10, 2026: YouTube says that starting February 1, 2027, new creators will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days for YPP ads and Premium revenue sharing. Existing YPP status is not affected. YouTube also says Shorts creators will need 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days to earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool, while new incentive programs and targeted Shorts ads create additional opportunities for eligible creators.

YouTube announced that new creators applying for YPP ads and Premium revenue sharing will face higher entry thresholds from February 1, 2027: 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified long-form watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Existing YPP status is not affected. For artists, the immediate action is to check the channel's route to monetization and review the updated terms before January 31, 2027.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube Blog published the announcement on August 10, 2026; the main changes begin February 1, 2027.
  • New creators will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days for YPP ads and Premium revenue sharing.
  • Existing YPP status is not impacted by the new entry thresholds, and the fan-funding, Creator Partnerships, and Shopping entry requirements remain unchanged.
  • Shorts creators will need 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days to earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool; missing that threshold does not remove a creator from YPP or affect other YPP earnings.

What is changing in the YouTube Partner Program?

YouTube says three parts of the program are changing on February 1, 2027: Premium Lite will expand, Shorts earnings and opportunities will evolve, and the entry thresholds for YPP ads and Premium revenue sharing will increase for new creators. The announcement was published on August 10, 2026, so this is a scheduled change rather than a rule already in effect.

The new entry route keeps the 1,000-subscriber requirement but raises the performance alternatives to 8,000 qualified watch hours from public long-form videos in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube says creators already in YPP are not affected by this entry-threshold update.

Why should independent artists care?

If your release plan depends on YouTube ad or Premium revenue, the date changes how you should model the path to eligibility. A channel that has not yet entered YPP may need a longer runway for public long-form video or a much larger Shorts audience after February 1, 2027. That is a planning consequence, not a promise that reaching a threshold will guarantee acceptance: YouTube still reviews channels against its policies.

YouTube also describes a separate Shorts earning threshold: maintaining 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to earn each month from the Shorts Creator Pool. Missing it does not remove a creator from YPP or affect other YPP earnings, including long-form video. The announcement also names possible bonuses for Shopping, production credits for brand deals, and direct 45% revenue share when an advertiser targets five or fewer eligible channels.

What should an artist do before February 2027?

Audit your route to eligibility

In YouTube Studio, record your current subscribers, qualified public long-form watch hours, qualified Shorts views, and whether you are already in YPP. Keep long-form and Shorts numbers separate: YouTube says Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the long-form watch-hour threshold.

Review terms by January 31, 2027

YouTube says creators should review and accept updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. Check the Watch Page, Shorts, and—if relevant—Commerce Product modules, then keep a dated record of what your channel has accepted. The announcement does not guarantee that any incentive or targeted-ad opportunity will be available to every artist.

What is still unclear?

YouTube describes the Shorts incentive programs as opportunities that eligible creators may be notified about as they launch; it does not publish universal eligibility or bonus amounts in the announcement. Premium Lite availability, targeted Shorts placements, and individual channel eligibility should therefore be checked in YouTube Studio and revisited as the February 1, 2027 rollout approaches.
