How to Add Song Chapters to a Full-Album YouTube Video
Add song chapters to a full-album YouTube video by placing a timestamp and title for each section in the video description, beginning at 00:00. Use the final uploaded video to measure song starts, save the description in YouTube Studio, then test the chapter labels and playback positions on desktop and phone.

What do song chapters do for an album video?
Chapters give a listener named places to jump within one continuous video. For a full album, that can mean finding a particular song without dragging the playback bar until the artwork or audio seems familiar.
YouTube's chapter instructions explain how creators add these sections and previews. Use titles a listener will recognize from your release. Keep credits, purchase links, and the wider release story elsewhere in the description so the track list stays easy to read.
The YouTube guide for musicians covers the wider channel plan. This walkthrough is for the finished album video you control and can edit in Studio.
How do you find the right song start times?
Measure each start in the final rendered video. An opening card, a crossfade, or a change to the gap between songs can move the boundaries away from the timings in your original audio folder.
Open the exact video you intend to publish. Listen around each transition and write down the point where you want someone selecting that song to arrive. Include an intentional opening section if it earns its own label. Check the final song through the end of the video as well.
For a continuous mix, decide consistently what counts as a song's start. A long overlapping transition needs a deliberate listening choice. Put the listener where the named song becomes useful to hear, then check that the previous song's chapter still makes sense.
Keep the track list tied to one video version
Save a copy of the chapter text beside the final video file. If your editor changes the cut, ask for a new timing check before pasting the old list into the replacement. A correct song order can still have incorrect playback positions.
How do you add manual chapters in YouTube Studio?
Add the timestamps and section titles to the selected video's Description field. YouTube currently requires the first timestamp to be 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and a minimum chapter length of 10 seconds.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the intended album video. Confirm the title and video before editing.
- Place your timestamp list in the Description, with one clearly named section per line.
- Check the spacing between starts, including the length from the final start to the video's end.
- Save the change, then open the watch page to inspect the result.
A short opening card may fit better inside the first song's chapter than in a separate section that fails the duration rule. Name that opening accurately. Do not add meaningless labels just to reach the required count.
If an editor is doing the description work, agree on who checks the finished watch page. The channel access guide covers granting and removing their access.
A worked track list for a continuous release
Constructed chapter example
Window Weather is an imaginary four-song release presented as a 14-minute, 10-second video. Its opening card lasts 18 seconds. The song starts below come from that final video, including the card.
00:00 Opening card
00:18 North Window
03:46 Half Light
07:28 Last Ferry
11:00 Home Before RainThe intervals after the opening card are 3:28, 3:42, 3:32, and 3:10. Check those differences against the actual transitions, rather than assuming a typed list is accurate because it looks orderly.
Suppose the editor later removes six seconds from the opening. Every song start moves earlier. The old list would drop listeners six seconds into each song. Re-measure the changed video and save a replacement list before calling the update finished.
Use your real titles and real listening boundaries when preparing your own list. These example names and timings are only a format demonstration.
Why are the chapters missing or landing in the wrong place?
Separate a timestamp problem from a feature-access problem. A label that lands mid-song needs a different check from a video that never displays chapter sections.
| Check first | Next action | |
|---|---|---|
| A song begins before its marker | Compare the list with the uploaded cut, including its opening | Correct the affected start and inspect the neighboring boundary |
| The list is saved but chapter sections are absent | Review the timestamp rules and current channel feature access | Use the eligibility controls below rather than repeatedly retyping the same list |
| The displayed sections use unexpected names | Inspect the saved description and whether your manual list was recognized | Confirm the intended manual list on the correct video |
| An update makes several songs late | Check whether the video was trimmed or the opening changed | Review all later starts against the new playback timeline |
YouTube lists chapters under Advanced features. On a computer, open Studio, Settings, Channel, then Feature eligibility to see your current access. Feature groups you can use are marked Enabled, though individual features can have additional requirements.
When access needs attention, follow the current advanced-feature instructions. YouTube describes phone verification followed by sufficient channel history or an available ID or video verification route. The identity options are not available to every creator.
YouTube also says active channel strikes or content that may be inappropriate to some viewers can make the chapter feature unavailable. Review those conditions before assuming the description is the only cause. The documentation does not promise that every eligible video will receive automatic chapters.
Your manual chapter list overrides automatic chapters. If you want to control the automatic option for this video, open Show more in its Studio details, find Automatic Chapters, change Allow automatic chapters, and save.

Store the description copy with its video version and check date.
Read the description as someone who has never seen your project folder. Confirm that names match the release artwork and that the other release links still work after your edit. A copied description can carry an old album title or last campaign's destination.
If you also provide subtitles, inspect those separately with the music-video subtitle workflow. Chapter labels mark sections; they do not supply the timed words of the song.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add chapters to an uploaded live set?+
Yes, YouTube's manual chapter workflow applies to uploaded videos. Use the actual set order and account for spoken introductions or breaks between songs. Check the start of each performance in that specific video rather than copying a studio album track list.
Can my channel editor complete identity verification for me?+
YouTube says only primary channel owners can verify their identity to get access to additional features. An editor can flag an eligibility problem, but the owner should handle the verification through YouTube's own controls.
How do I stop automatic chapters on future uploads?+
In YouTube Studio, open Settings, Upload defaults, then Advanced settings. Uncheck Allow automatic chapters when available and eligible, then save. Review the settings on an existing video separately if you also want to change that video's behavior.
Do chapters guarantee more views or better search rankings?+
No performance result is promised here. YouTube describes chapters as a way to add context and revisit parts of a video. Judge your setup first by whether listeners can find the intended song and land at the correct point.
