Pre-save guide

How to Set Up an iTunes Instant Gratification Track

The short answer

Set up an iTunes album pre-order through your distributor and designate a track for early availability. Confirm the track, its start date and the territories before delivery. Apple uses that pre-order and an eligible early track to enable Apple Music pre-add. Check the iTunes and Apple Music listings separately before sharing either link.

Choose the recording before you set the dates

Pick one track that makes sense on its own and still tells a listener what kind of album they are getting. Send the exact recording name, sequence number and ISRC to whoever handles delivery. If your album includes an acoustic reprise with a similar name, include the version in the brief so nobody has to guess.

Apple calls this an instant gratification track. During the pre-order window, listeners can buy the designated track on iTunes or stream it as part of the Apple Music pre-add. An ordinary preview is a different setting. Confirm which recording will be available in full.

For the wider campaign and where pre-saves fit, see the pre-save guide. This setup starts with the album delivery itself.

Check what your distributor can deliver

Start with the distributor that is delivering the album. Apple publishes platform requirements for dates and sale territories, while distributors decide which delivery controls they offer you and when you can use them.

Two distributor workflows for the same store feature
Where you set it upWhat to check before sending
DistroKidEnable iTunes pre-order with a future date. Once the pre-order listing is live, use the request form linked from its help page.DistroKid says a later release edit undoes the early-track request. Check the album details first and resubmit the request if you make an edit.
CD BabyChoose the early track during eligible album setup. Its documented workflow requires an album with at least 11 tracks and an early track under 10 minutes. It says you cannot change that track after delivery to iTunes.

Those are the providers' own instructions. If you use another service, send a short brief and ask how it wants the request. Give it the album title and UPC when assigned, the recording and ISRC, the intended store territories, the pre-order date, the early-track date and the full album release date. Ask which fields can still be corrected after delivery.

Put the three dates on the same calendar

Give each date a job. The pre-order date opens the album listing for orders. The early-track date controls when the selected recording becomes available. The album date is when the rest of the release is due. Ask your provider to confirm whether it supports separate dates before setting a public schedule.

Worked example for an imaginary 12-track album called Tide Glass
Delivery briefListener check
November 13Open the pre-order. Designate track 4, Night Ferry, at 3:48 for early access on the same date.Verify the correct album and track in the Canadian iTunes Store and the corresponding Apple Music listing.
November 16Schedule the announcement after the initial storefront check.Open each shared link as a listener. Use wording that matches the purchase or library action offered there.
December 4Release the complete album.Confirm the remaining tracks are available and refresh the release links in scheduled posts.

These dates are a planning example. Apple requires the sales start date to follow the early pre-order date and the track to be cleared for the territory. Get the delivery deadline from your distributor and allow for processing. For the rest of the schedule, use the release strategy guide.

Verify the storefronts before announcing the track

Storefront check

Test the links fans will get

  1. 01

    Match

Open the album by its store link

Confirm the cover, artist, sequence and recording version against the delivered brief.

  2. 02

    Buy

    Check the iTunes Store listing

Look for the pre-order action and the intended track's availability in the target storefront. You can check the listing without making a purchase.

  3. 03

    Listen

Open the Apple Music listing separately

Confirm the album offers the expected pre-add action and the early track plays for a listener in the intended territory.

  4. 04

    Escalate

Send a precise report if a check fails

Include the storefront, timestamp, store URL, UPC and expected early-track date. Ask the distributor to confirm what it sent.

If the album page exists but the early track is unavailable, hold the announcement that promises early listening. Ask someone with the intended storefront to repeat the check. A preview in your distributor dashboard cannot tell you what a listener in another country sees.

Work back from the album date and leave time for the storefront check

Apple and distributor instructions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a music video as the early item?+

Apple's provider documentation allows eligible music videos. Ask your distributor whether its delivery workflow supports one before planning a campaign around it.

Can every track unlock during the pre-order?+

Apple has pricing rules that keep the combined price of early tracks below the album price by at least the price of one mid-tier song. Your distributor may impose stricter limits, so get approval for the actual track list.

Does a Spotify pre-save create an Apple pre-add?+

No. They are separate listener actions on separate services. Verify your Apple listing even if the Spotify link already works.

What if my distributor doesn't offer early tracks?+

Ask whether the option is unavailable for your release or unavailable across the service. If you cannot deliver an eligible early track, plan the announcement around the confirmed release date and available links.
