FACTOR Grants for Independent Artists: 2026–27 Programs
FACTOR funds eligible Canadian artists through separate programs for development, recording, songwriting, live performance, and video. Your artist rating, release history, activity, deadline, and prior funding determine the available lane. Read the current program and guideline, choose only one juried recording or development option, and budget for the portion FACTOR will not cover.

The album page was waiting for final guidelines
FACTOR had announced the album intake and displayed summary terms, but its page still said the full 2026-27 guidelines were to come when Velveteen reviewed it. Open the published guideline before relying on any album rule in this table.
How should you choose among the three juried programs?
Juried lane audit
Choose once for the fiscal year
Career stage
Compare the release-history and prior-funding limits with the artist's full FACTOR history
Prevents an ineligible early-career claim or a program choice below the artist's actual stage.
Format
Match the intended release to the track-count and duration definition
Separates the development, single/EP, and album jobs before budget work begins.
Assessment audio
Use the strongest eligible demos and make the written plan consistent with what the jury hears
Gives the artistic case and project case one direction.
Plan
Describe achievable activities, market context, team, schedule, and outcomes
Lets jurors evaluate whether the proposed next step fits the artist's current resources.
Budget
Apply the program share only to accepted eligible costs and identify the balance
Avoids a request that cannot be financed even if the maximum is awarded.
What does the Artist Development percentage mean in cash?
A plan equal to the award ceiling is too small to generate the full contribution. At the published share, the artist needs a larger base of accepted eligible expenses. The balance remains the applicant’s responsibility, and removed costs reduce the eligible base used in the calculation.
Keep a second budget view for cash timing. FACTOR commonly advances part of an accepted offer and releases the rest after completion. Your project may need enough working cash to pay suppliers, preserve proof, and finish reporting before the final amount arrives.

Frequently asked questions
Can a brand-new artist apply for FACTOR funding?+
A new profile receives the General rating, but each program adds its own history rules. Artist Development expects at least one commercially released track and limits how long the artist can have been releasing music. A completely unreleased act may need to build the required profile and release history before that program fits.
Can I apply to Artist Development and Juried Sound Recording together?+
No. FACTOR's current rules allow an artist to apply to only one of the three juried development or recording programs in the same fiscal year: Artist Development, Juried Sound Recording Single/EP, or Juried Sound Recording Album. Choose the lane that matches the release format, career stage, budget, and strongest assessment material.
Can I start a FACTOR project before the result arrives?+
FACTOR says eligible expenses incurred after submission can be considered if the application succeeds, but starting creates your own funding risk. A valid expense date is not an approval. Keep contracts flexible, preserve invoices and proof of payment, and avoid spending money you cannot carry if the jury or staff decision is unsuccessful.
What if the FACTOR deadline has already passed?+
Treat the intake as closed for that fiscal cycle; the program may return under a later guideline. Check whether another current program fits the activity, record the next review date, and prepare profiles and support material before the next cycle opens. Avoid a mismatched lane chosen merely because its deadline is later.
Does FACTOR pay the full project budget?+
No. Program percentages, project maximums, annual caps, and component sub-limits apply. Only accepted eligible costs enter the grant calculation. Your budget needs a credible source for the remaining share, plus enough cash to manage the advance and final-payment schedule for the selected program.
